my son, John, is moving to Kankakee, Ill. The house he's buying is on the Kankakee River. he
s been told the river is full of smallmouth. Anybody know anything about that river or, for that matter, how to fish that region's waters generally?

Only plentiful things I've ever seen in Illinois rivers are "white eels."

Are white eels like Coney Island whitefish?

Yes, but they don't follow the tide schedule.

Colston,

The Kankakee river is a pretty popular river to fish. The Iriquois River joins the Kankakee near the town of Kankakee Ill.

Here's a link to a PDF about the Kankakee and Iriquois. (It is a bit dated but has good information for access and fish species.)

https://www.ifishillinois.org/publicati ... _Guide.pdf

I have never fished it myself, but have worked in that area several times.

Of course there are no trout, but it's supposed to be pretty darned good warm water fishery.
Well known for walleye, smallmouth, and channel catfish.

I'm a long way away, but river smallies are river smallies.

If he reads, get him these books:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/09763 ... bl_vppi_i1
https://www.amazon.com/Fly-Fishing-Smal ... Src=detail

This one: https://www.amazon.com/Smallmouth-Fly-F ... karczynski

...is the best, hands down, and while it is about fly fishing for smallies, just about everything in it translates easily to checking gear.

Don't use chicken guts here. Use crab.
