I've owned 2 4Runners. Actually, I would currently own 2, but my son recently totaled the 1999 vehicle. No one was injured, which is one the primary reasons we originally purchased it. I like them a lot. They are legitimate 4WD vehicles when you need them to be. One of the most versatile vehicles on the market.

I gave the 4Runner a quick look. It got crossed off the list due to mileage.
I've still got my old 4WD Dodge Ram if I feel the need for going way off road. The body is shot, so I don't care about where I take that.

That's why I didn't get a 4runner. I drive 100 miles a day. 28mpg vs 18mpg makes a difference. And when I need real 4WD, I have resources up to, and including, two Ford Broncos, a Dodge Ram 4wd truck and an H2 Hummer (not mine, but I can borrow them anytime).


The three reasons I didn't get an Outback: 1) my best female friend that I'm not married to, or a father of, had just bought one. I wasn't about to get a car like hers. 2) I don't like CVT transmissions. 3) I have folks that sometime ride in the back seat, including a grandson. The Highlander has passenger controlled a/c and heat in the back. The outback didn't have a/c vents back there.

Satchel: the inherent transmission problems (other than it just being a CVT) with Outbacks was fixed with the 2016 model.

Doug, my buddy's was an older model. Not a cvt. 4 speed automatic. First and second still worked fine, 3 not so much and 4th was gone.
also I think what Bux is asking is really "how is the highlander on rain slick grass?

The last time I got stuck, Pappa Bush was President. The Highlander did well crossing a creek a month ago. The water was only 6 inches deep, but the approaches were wet.

Of course, I know how to drive. That helps.

Yeah,the gas mileage on the 4 runner sucks.But I've never been one to concern myself with such things.I couldnt even tell you what a gallon of gas costs today,I dont look.When I need gas,I get gas.I get 18 mpg in the Toyota and about 45 mpg on my bike,so I figure it averages out to decent mileage,

Better than a Volvo.
