I've come cross a bunch of individually packaged flies labeled "Terry Friedrich Custom Flies" and "The Fly Fisherman, Titusville, Florida." They appear to be a step, but a low step, above flies made in Asian and sold in little plastic boxes in general stores. Anybody ever hear of these fles? What should I do with them. I'm inclines to toss them at bluegills.

I don't have the mouse. I looked him up, too. Says he fished the St. Johns for gills and bass. The flies I have are pretty clearly gill flies...not nearly as pretty or fancy as the ones pictured when you Google him.

That's what I'd do.

I know I'm a heathen, what with pike and bass as my primary targets with fly rods...but I'd take a 10" bluegill over a 16" inch trout any day...particularly if I could eat them...

Further,

You must grasp the differences between fishing for trout and bluegill/sunfish

Trout fishing is flirtation, courtship, teasing, cheek-to cheek dancing with soft music amidst beautiful surroundings in the pursuit of the prettiest girl in the school. Thence, when you finally succeed, you hold and admire all that natural beauty and grace, and briefly caress her... ever so lightly... as you bid her goodbye as she glides away.
Bluegill fishing is dancing with the eager misshaped broad that cannot wait to eat grubs, pickled sardines, leftover bologna sandwiches...and, as she leaves, she will try to spike you with her fins.

Thanks for the laugh; the lyrical description of trout fishing contrasted with the abrupt drop into the experience of the common man was both apt and descriptive...

...but...I don't fish for bluegills either...the fish I fish for eat bluegills...and trout...and walleye...and bass...

Can't wait to hear what you have to say about them.

If smallmouth bass were as pretty as trout, nobody would fish for trout.

True enough...but gotta tell you...smallies are as pretty as trout in clear northern water...if you have the right perspective...

On any given day, here, in NW WI, if I have a choice between trout and smallies...I'm going to pick smallies most days...and I've got really, really good opportunity for both.

All of that is, of course, IMO. YMMV, take with a grain of salt, delusions of adequacy may develop, keep out of the reach of children, etc.

I prefer the places trout live vs where smallies live.
