It's raining again today. The rivers were just getting to fishable levels and now the forecast is for 3 days of rain. Looks like my next chance to wet a line will be around the 10th of August when I visit Charlie in Bend.

Just a bit more information on my visit. I'll be in the US for 3 months visiting relatives and such. I have arranged with CharlieS to do some fishing around Bend. He has most generously offered to take me and my younger (by 11 months) brother fishing around Bend. I'll try to post about what fishing I do get in (I plan more than just three days with Charlie) and maybe other stuff that I happen to get involved with. I'm back in NZ at the end of October and two days later I'm off for three days fishing with a good friend. GAWD I love being retired!

Are you spending all your three months in the Oregon area? Keep us posted on travels to other parts of the country.

Satchel,

The first month is already organized around Oregon and N. California. I have one trip planned for the third week of September to Arizona and I hope to tag along on my brother's elk hunting trip to Idaho. I don't have anything planned for trips further east than that.

I really hope the elk thing works out for you. What a way to end a trip.

Really looking forward to hosting!! Was up at one of the better lakes this last week. Numerous Rainbows taken from 15-24 inches. I have arranged for Mike and Patrick to fish with who I consider to be the best Stillwater guide in Central Oregon on 12 August.

I had an encounter with a very large trout (probably a brown) in the Deschutes not far outside Bend one night a number of years ago.

There was not much water in the river that time of the year, and where I was fishing it flowed slowly in a channel between some large rocks that were on both sides of the stream. It was nearly dark, and I wasn’t really expecting to catch anything, but I made one last cast upstream and watched my Parachute Adams slowly float along with the current as it drifted lazily back toward me.

When the fly had drifted about 20’ I looked upstream and saw a large form slowly swimming downstream several feet behind my fly. My first thought was “that’s got to be a beaver. I don’t want a darn beaver to get hooked on my fly.” (No matter that I’ve never seen or heard of a beaver getting hooked on a fly.)

So, just as my fly and this large “beaver” got right in front of me, I quickly jerked my fly off the water. It wasn’t a beaver after all, but a very big trout coming for my fly! I must have scared the daylight out of him, and he quickly turned tail, splashed water a couple feet high, and headed back to where he had been hiding near the head of that pool.

I’m sure you will enjoy your fishing there, Micheal.
