Doug is right about the Northern Neck. It was a lot better place before they built those damned bridges.

The telling thing is that when McClellan tried to sneak into Richmond, he avoided the Northern Neck. He knew if he got there, he'd never get away. The Northern Neck is a wonderful spot, guarded at the Tappahanock Bridge by Bald Eagles, but it is the Aleutian Islands of the East Coast.

Lee avoided the NN, too. He new if he put troops here the Yankees, who controlled the rivers, would put a cork in the upper end of the Neck near Fredericksburg and the troops would just sit here idle. The Yanee Navy mode free with the Neck, tho. Robbed us blind. Took my great great grandfather's horses in one raid. (That's documented. The Yankee officer was Foxhall Alexander Parker, my great grandfather, Foxhall Alexander Daingerfield, a Confederate cavalry officer's cousin.)
