A fine lady and a credit to her family and her country.

A fine American and a credit to humanity. For me, Mrs. Bush was the epitome of the Southern Matriarch. I'd have enjoyed having a glass or two of bourbon with her. I think she would have enjoyed my porch.

A guy I work with used the be a uniformed K9 guy with the secret service. He said she knew everyone by name and validates the popular opinion that she was a kind, but tough woman. To illustrate, he told me how she often visited with him when out walking their dog, Millie. On one occasion, near Christmas, she asked him not to go anywhere because she had a gift for him. She hurried inside and reappeared with a gift.

When he got home late that night, he woke his wife up and said, “You won’t believe this , but the First Lady gave us a Christmas present.” They opened it and it was a coffee table book “penned” by Millie. She had included a handwritten note on the inside cover, addressing them by name.

The next day, she passed by his post and he called out to her and thanked her for the gift, noting how touched they both were by the personal note.

When he said this, she scowled, stared at him and said sternly, “It’s not Christmas yet.”

His heart sank and as he was trying to stammer out an apology, she smiled and said, “Gotcha!”

She was clearly liked by those who knew her.
