Can somebody tell me why my laptop keeps telling me it doesn't recognize the mouse I use? I'll be working along and a bell will ring and a message pop up saying "USB device not recognzed" even though I've been using the mouse right along. To get To get the ringing and pop up to stop, I have to unplug the mouse and then replug it.
After that I'm good for awhile until it starts again.i

it's not just the current mouse, but it happened with the earlier mouse I used. Since the mouse is the only USB device attached, it's the mouse the computer is talking about.

What's going on?

It's either the USB port, or the USB connector itself. Try another port first.

I'd say Gene has it.

Most problems that I see turn out to be connection problems.

Another possibility, could be that your computer doesn't like the driver for the mouse. I would guess that you just bought a USB mouse, plugged it in, and off you went. It may just be using a generic USB mouse driver.
You could search online for a driver for the model of mouse that you have. Then download and install that driver.

I would say that Gene's post is more likely the problem than the driver.

Maybe spray some compressed air into your USB port, or maybe some electronics contact cleaner if you have that available. (make sure the laptop is off and the battery removed)

There's probably some software you need to download or update. Maybe a driver is out of date.

I see the same message when I have my wireless phone charger plugged into one of my USB ports. I just ignore it because I don't want to spend the time searching for a download to fix it.

In my professional opinion, this is a classic PBKAC error.

I knew someone would come along and get it. Not surprised it was Doug. PBKAC is the source of a surprising number of computer problems.

In the mid-90's, I was working as a programmer for a small company and was on the phone with a gentleman who was supposed to be the main information technology guy for one of our customers. I was trying to troubleshoot an issue he was reporting. He was using Windows 95 and I said, "First, go to your desktop and double-click on MyComputer."

There was a long silence, then he finally said, "I don't see your computer."

Classic PBKAC error.

There is a related error we referred to a lot in those days which is phonetically pronounced "eye-dee-ten-tee". In written form it is ID10T!

My mouse has 2 batteries (no cord) and it gets erratic when the batteries weaken. Just changed them a few days ago after many months of regular use. If you have a mouse that's "wired" to the's likely to be the wiring and or the connections as noted above
