I assume that many of you are not well acquainted with the rock band called Rush. Thought you might find the lyrics to their song called "The Trees" interesting and familiar, given our current cultural climate and obsession with the impossible idea of "fairness".

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
And they're quite convinced they're right
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade?

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream 'oppression!'
And the oaks, just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet,
Axe,
And saw

Rush is a favorite. I've seen them multiple times.

"The Trees" is probably one of my top ten.

When the song was released, people thought it was about Canada and the U.S.
(Considering all of the band members are from Canada.)
The lyricist, Peart, said that was not the meaning behind the song.

How dare the guy who wrote the song try to tell people what it means. Sounds like he's an oak. ;)

Jack Hanley would agree: Rush's drummer, Neal Peart, was in a league into himself.

Yes, Jack would agree and he's right.

The band, particularly Peart, are outspoken libertarians. I guess it's stay out of our lives, let us smoke pot and wear toques.

While I am not a libertarian, the song illustrates what is going on in our country quite well.

I don't know if its Libertarian but I've always 100 per cent agreed with there Hank, Jr. lyrics:

This is a coalition to ban coalitions
I ain't a politician but I've got views
Some folks want to ban cars
Some want to get rid of Fender guitars

Why don't you do your thing
And we do our thing too?
Now they want to take my cigarettes
And all my good whiskey

And these damn coalitions
They're after you and me
They want to get rid of my forty fours
And all the R rated films

If they only knew how much
We'd all love to get rid of them
And this is a coalition to ban coalitions
The views of a musician, yeah, I've got some

Some folks want to ban cars
Some want to get rid of electric guitars
Why can't everybody else
Leave everybody else alone?

Now the latest thing they want
To stomp out is violence on TV
And the worst of all
Is that Oscar winning rabbit Bugs Bunny

Farewell, Foghorn Leghorn
So long Yosemite Sam
They're messing with our heroes
And we got to stop them now

And this is a coalition to ban coalitions

They sound better than they read: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrXnDbOpxU4

I saw them one time back before Peart was the drummer. I thought they were a great band but just never had the opportunity to see them again.

Wow Ron, that was very early on. Before their first album came out in 1974.

The original drummer, John Rutsey, recorded the first album but shortly left after that.
Peart was immediately brought in and been with them ever since.
