Just came across some family history from a century ago.

My mother's eldest brother, my Uncle Charlie, was my god-father. I knew him well ...many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and other family gatherings, outings and visits from years long past. I have a picture of Uncle Charlie in uniform, WWI, campaign hat, stiff collared khaki jacket, with the Signal Corps pin. He looks like a kid - but with the blank stare I've seen on those who "have been there." The note on the back reads:
Charles William Wild:
Co. C, 9th Field Signal Bn., 5th Division, U.S. Army 4/17/17 to 8/1/19.
Arnould, St. Die, Frappelle, St. Michel, Argonne-Meuse.
Cited for gallantry in action on General Orders No. 11, 5th Division, 12/31/1919.
Left the service as a Sergeant, Signal Corps, U.S. Army.

Uncle Charlie built me a 9 ft./ three-piece, cane fly rod for my 10th birthday...my first fly rod, and it came with a new Pflueger Medalist reel. It's all long gone, but I remember....that's why the Red Diamond, 5th Division patch is on my fly vest.
