Before television, radio was king, and the great sportscasters were the familiar voices we grew up with.
Marty Glickman
Bill Stern
Don Dunphy
Curt Gowdy
Mel Allen

Television changed everything, but those gents could make you feel like you "were there" sitting beside them.
You needed creativity to visualize the game, but these men built the foundation by painting the pictures and the excitement with only their words. Football, baseball, ice hockey, boxing ..even horse racing...they could do it all.
Kids who can remember hiding under the covers to listen to a NY Ranger hockey game had an edge over those who were mere lumps, sitting on a sofa, watching TV.

"He drives through the defense ....stops...shoots...AND IT'S GOOD....like Nedick's !

Ed,
I remember as a kid sneaking a transistor radio into school and plugging the ear phone in my ear listening to Curt Gowdy do the WS.

Also listening to Marty Glickman was magical.

I would usually rather listen to a MLB game than watch it on television. Little League WS and college baseball I will watch on the tube. North Mississippi used to be Cardinal territory on the local stations.

Curt Gowdy had a great voice and loved his outdoors show.

Gowdy is very down to earth. My cousins in Wyoming are good friends with the family. Salt of the earth.

Another voice I miss is Pat Summerall. The man was fun to listen to.

I'll bet Bux misses the days of cranking on the front of car to start it too. No need to be lump and sit in the seat and turn a key (or push a button today).
