Bux recently sent me Pat Conroy's last novel, "South Broad." Bevause I've always thought Conroy was a weenie who made a living whining about his old daddy, I've never liked him. South Broad doesn't whine about the narator's daddy but everybody is whining about the emotional scars childhood gave them. All that said, it's a pretty entertaining book that would be better if you actually like the characters.

At one point in the book Conroy's narrator, who is a newspaper columnist, tells the 10 things the rest of the country hates about the South, starting with our accents. It's number 10 that I like: "All Americans who are not Southern hate the South because they know Southerners don't give a rat's fanny what the rest of the country thinks of them."

With Conroy, you have to focus on the dialogue. No writer in the past fifty years wrote better dialogue than Conroy. His character's voices are real.

Pat really only carried on about Dad in Santini and, to a lesser extent, Tides.

I hated Catcher in the Rye precisely because Holden Caulfield was such a whiner that I wanted nothing more than to whip his butt. I guess Salinger made me feel something with that character, but I have the feeling that it wasn’t the result he intended. I hated the book.

You make this sound similar.

The whining kid is why I always disliked "Shane."

Colston, my opinion of Conroy is the same as yours. If you don't like whining, don't read The Death of Santini.
