JD,

That logic is somewhat skewed. You might next claim that as soon as the fly alights upon the water's surface, they are no longer flies, but floaters, drifters or egg layers. Using that your logic, many of the dry flies you've sent over the years should best be regarded as eager and determined nymphs.

Hmmmm....lotta fly fishermen fish subsurface...nymphs, streamers...then there's topwater flies that are designed ti invoke mice, frogs...

Fly fishing just sounds better than titsy lure fishing, and the original titsy lures were designed (primarily) to imitate some type of insect.
