Squire,

Picking the six flies that would cover 90% of the days on the river:

Adams
Cahills, light & dark
Caddis, "Mother's Day (black body) & yellow body
IPW, Infamous pink worm ala Fred Bridge
Prince nymph (with or without bead head)

I found this place bentonflybox.com a few weeks ago. Most of their flies are $3.50 a half dozen.I ordered a bunch of different patterns.I think they look pretty well tied,we'll see how they hold up come spring.

Quick tip....
Put some head cement on each of them...inexpensive flies always need extra glue to hold them together.

No charge for this service. :)

NYFLY,

A few of us have used Hills Discount Flies for years. They get their flies from the same places in Thailand and Malaysia and Vietnam that other fly shops do. I've never had a problem. They're less expensive than 3.50 for six, usually.

Thanks for the tip,Doug.I like to find places that dont sell flies made in Asia and Africa, but are tied in the USA.I've used both, and mostly they are both good, although the last "foreign" batch I got thru Orvis were tied in Africa somewhere and they were terrible.I just like the idea of supporting American tiers, when I can.

I understand. I do too. That's why I don't buy Budweiser products - owned by the Belgians. Although some of my bourbon and all of my scotch is made by companies owned by the British. But my car was made in America, in Indiana - Toyota. I'm a hypocrite.

Dont mind buying foreign beer and liquor, they happen to do it better.Heineken and Chopin vodka for me.I justify my Toyota same as you,it was built in America.Looked at Hills Discount link. Most of the flies,at least the first 3 pages were a bit higher than $3.50 half dozen.I have no illusions that the ones from Benton are really any more durable than the asian variety, just feels better knowing some one eyed, one armed former enemy combatant didnt tie 'em,lol.

You're not a hypocrite, you're a capitalist. You have the freedom to decide what you do with your resources in a way you believe benefits you most. It's a bonus that my Toyota was made in either Kentucky or Indiana (where Camry's are made), but I bought it because I believe I'm getting the best car for me for my resources. Cars from American companies are catching up, but I will always buy what's best for me.

As to flies, if they catch fish and last long enough for me to hang it up on a rock or a tree somewhere, then the less expensive, the better. Don't care if it was tied in Florida or Malaysia.
